A HAUNTING IN VENICE

by HILDUR GUDNADOTTIR

Score Producer

A Haunting in Venice is a film directed by Kenneth Branagh featuring a super unusual score, based around the instruments and tonalities of post-war western classical music. The influences of Messian and Luigi Nono hover in the air. As a producer, I developed techniques for spatialising dissonant woodwind materials around the cinema, so that the score oscilates between simple stereo, and a gasping 3D maze of overtones - like a spirit being conjured from the center of the room.

THE RAILWAYMEN

A television series by YRF

Composer

Bold, thriller from Indian producers YRF about the Bohpal Gas Disaster. The score, features heavily warped strings, juxtaposed against modern, driving synthesis, to create a sense of tension and struggle.

SIX OF ONE

A film by MINKA BLEAKLEY

Composer

Striking, bold first film from Australian director Minka Bleakley, telling the story of a young mother is overwhelmed by her new responsibilities. She takes off from her rural-suburban home, leaving her hard-partying husband to pick up the pieces. The score is simple, working with looped, gently broken guitars and looming, melancholy atmospheres.

BATTLEFIELD 2042

A video game by EA and DICE

Composer

This score is unusually heavy and conceptual, bringing hyper processed sounds into a dystopian near-future world in which climate change has taken hold. Each sound is made from materials in the level, so what sounds like drums, electronics and strings is really made of metals, sand, glass, custom AI Scripts to tease out new textures from field recordings, and big bass drivers stuck in chaotic feedback systems.

THE RIVER BETWEEN US

A film by CARL GIERSTORFER

Composer

A gorgeous film about an uncontacted Peruvian tribe and a neighbouring villages attempts to understand them. The simple string and organ score features a Peruvian funeral song reharmonised and reorchestrated, which slowly deconstructs as the film moves on.

I’M NOT A MONSTER

A BBC / PBS series by JOSHUA BAKER

Composer

Joshua Baker is one of the UK’s most promising journalists. The series follows his 4 year long challenge to find Sam, a mother from the USA who brings her young family to ISIS controlled Syria to fight for the terrorist group. The highly awarded series was applauded for its weighty sound world of processed field recordings.

CHERNOBYL

by HILDUR GUDNADOTTIR

Score Producer

Chernobyl was the highest rated TV Show ever on its release, and its score quickly became celebrated the world over, winning an EMMY for Best Score in a Limited Series as well as numerous other accolades. The score is made entirely from recordings of a Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania, processed using tape machines and computers in my studio in Berlin alongside composer Hildur Gudnadottir.

JOKER

by HILDUR GUDNADOTTIR

Score Producer

This score began in 2018 with tiny recording sessions in the Funkhaus in Berlin, and then developing with Hildur’s string writing in her studio and hefty amounts of sound mangling in mine here in Berlin. Finally we ended up in New York with a 100 piece Orchestra to bring the work to life. It went on to win an Academy Award for Best Original Score, a Golden Globe for Best Original Score, a BAFTA for Best Original Score and the film itself won the Golden Lion at Venice.

MOTHER!

by DARREN ARONOFSKY

Score Production & Musical Sound Design

ARONOFSKY makes some of the most challenging films around, emotional, dark and on the edge of lunacy. mother! is a religious allegory dressed up as a classic home invasion movie and the sound world is truly unique. The music-less sound world is entirely made of textures and scrapes from the original score, layered into the SFX of the house to bring the world to life.

IMMERSIVE REALITY

ANIMATE

by Chris Salter
Music/ Sound by Sam Slater, Caterina Barbieri, Limpe Fuchs

»Animate« sits at the crossroads of performance, installation and radio play utilizing the newest Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies in order to blur the experience between the physical and the digital world. An interdisciplinary international artistic and technological team from Montreal and Berlin thus takes the Weimar audience on an extraordinary participatory journey that uses the creative potential of new technologies to address the urgency of climate catastrophe.

Featuring MONOM / 4D Sound’s custom 48 Channel Speaker system, audience members are drawn through climate affected Canada, and brought to a peak in an earthquake of sound, generative VR rocks and poinency, asking us in what way we wish to inhabit our earth.

Temple of Alternative Histories

by Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, Anna Rún Tryggvadottir and Staatstheater Kassel

Consisting of three major components—an arts exhibition, public programme, and stage work—Temple of Alternative Histories was inspired by the origins of the theater as a ritualistic meeting place, a structure built around an empty metaphorical space intended to stage and host meaning.

Working directly with the Orchestra, recycling motifs from Wagner’s Ring Cycle, stretching and distorting them into unheard shapes with new meanings using electronics and then re-scoring this for the Orchestra, the music becomes a living reaction to a divisive work in the canon.
